IxDA welcomes Amazon Design as our exclusive partner in presenting this year’s edition of the Student Design Charette (SDC). The sponsorship demonstrates Amazon’s support of IxDA’s mission to improve the human condition through interaction design and underlines both organizations’ commitment to equity and inclusion.

“Amazon Design is honored to help IxDA scale the Student Design Charette. New for 2022, the program is accepting up to 80 participants,” says Corey Dangel, Executive Producer — Amazon Design Community Leader. “Amazon is pleased to help the SDC almost double its overall impact in one cycle.”

As a platform, IxDA provides an opportunity for interaction design professionals from around the world to come together to learn and share. The SDC champions the next generation of interaction design — fostering community, collaboration, and nurturing good practices by new designers. It embraces a broad definition of what it means to be a student. You may be an undergraduate or graduate student in a degree program; you may be pursuing a private or online course; you may be part of an internship program in a studio or company, or you might be a practitioner looking to transfer skills from a related field.

The Student Design Charette brings together students and early professionals to tackle big challenges. The 2022 brief asks teams to explore how approaches to higher education and workplaces are changing. They will examine how rethinking systems can enable cultures of inclusion and equity, and address biases, assumptions, and barriers that marginalize participation.

This year’s program garnered interest from more than 25 countries. The successful applicants apply as individuals and are matched to form diverse teams. Each team is paired with a member of the Amazon Design team and an SDC alumni as coaches. The program phases include research, concept development, and prototyping, culminating with final presentations to an international jury from the IxDA community. All participants receive a ticket to attend Interaction 23, while the winning team will have their travel and accommodation covered to present their work as part of the Interaction 23 program.

“IxDA is grateful for this significant commitment from Amazon Design,” said Andrea Mignolo, IxDA President. “Amazon’s partnership enables us to make this year’s SDC more inclusive by welcoming a diverse cohort of participants from around the globe.”
